I have been hearing Wai Yee’s voice since I started my netball career. She is energetic, encouraging and pushes you to your max, but not in a this-is-bootcamp-prepare-to-suffer kind of way. So when I found out that she was now offering online workout sessions through her gym/company SWEAT!, I quickly signed up for a session.

Sign up was super easy, click on the Zoom link in their Instagram bio ten minutes before the online class –6.30pm Wednesdays and Fridays– and pay $8 for the class via Paynow or PayLah! No packages or call ahead necessary.

Five minutes before my session, I made a dash to borrow some weights from my spouse. However, I could not even lift those weights (what is he using these for?!) so I informed Wai Yee at the last minute that I didn’t have any weights and she promptly adjusted the exercises for me. (I could have used a detergent bottle as suggested, but at 5kg…)

There were two other people in the Zoom workout, and Wai Yee’s instructions were clear and upbeat. The exercises were varied and the sets changed quickly enough that I didn’t feel the dread of the rest of the hour. She encouraged me (especially towards the end) to do it slowly but in good form. I was also unsurprised to find that I had been doing lunges incorrectly, it has been 16 years since I’ve done a gym session with an instructor. You can’t get this kind of correction from online videos!

I had to finish the hour of exercise- there was no pause button, no clicking on other entertainment videos, and there was Wai Yee- making sure I was doing things in the right form and adjusting the exercises for this off-off-off-peak ex-athlete so that I would finish the sets. It was a solid hour of exercise and it felt really good.

Wai Yee believes in a healthy body, so there is none of that get slimmer/thinner/smaller butt/smaller thighs chatter that fills a lot of the free pseudo-fitness videos online. In fact, I really appreciated that she reminded the participants to “enjoy your exercise!” (because that’s what it is about), and complimented those using weights on their good form.

Prior to this stay at home season, SWEAT! classes were mostly held at their gym. Currently, sessions are available on Saturdays (call 81687715 to book a slot) in small groups at their gym, at the park at the Pinnacle on Mon/Tues (call to book a slot), and online. SWEAT! is fully registered with SportSG for their sessions.

I have seen many young athletes work with Wai Yee after knee or ankle injuries to get back in good physical form. Some of them have gone back to participate in high-level competitions. Her knowledge, patience and persistence helps in their rehabilitation process, with the post-operation healing journey being a long one, where positivity is important.

Wai Yee is fully certified in Strength and Conditioning, Fitness Instruction and Coaching, also has several years of experience in this field and in Netball coaching as well. She also has a degree in Physical Education (Hons) from Hunter College in NYC. Contact her at 81687715 to see how she can help you with workshops, talks, coaching or training.

Whether you are an ahjumma trying to get fit again (guess who), an athlete training to move up to the next level, or a regular person wanting a professional partner in your fitness journey, contact SWEAT! at 81687715 to see what timing and type of session can fit your needs.
